Epiphytic hydroids on <i>Posidonia oceanica</i> seagrass meadows are winner organisms under future ocean acidification conditions: evidence from a CO2 vent system (Ischia Island, Italy)

چکیده
Effects of ocean acidification (OA) on the plant phenology and colonization/settlement pattern hydrozoan epibiont community leaves seagrass Posidonia oceanica have been studied at volcanic CO2 vents off Ischia (Italy). The study was conducted in shallow stands (2.5–3.5 m depth), three stations north south sides vent’s area (Castello Aragonese vents), distributed along a pH gradient. At each station, 10–15 P. shoots were collected every months for one-year cycle (Sept 2009–2010). shoot density beds most acidified gradient (pH < 7.4) significantly higher than that control = 8.10). On other hand, we recorded lower leaf lengths widths whole year observations, compared to those stations. However, overall surface (Leaf Area Index) available epiphytes under conditions side both because OA conditions. canopy accounted seven species, which relatively abundant occurring all around (Sertularia perpusilla, Plumularia obliqua, Clytia hemisphaerica). All hydroids species showed clear tolerance low levels, including chitinous non-calcifying forms, likely favoured also by absence competition substratum with calcareous forms selected against OA.

The future of seagrass meadows
Seagrasses cover about 0.1–0.2% of the global ocean, and develop highly productive ecosystems which fulfil a key role in the coastal ecosystem. Widespread seagrass loss results from direct human impacts, including mechanical damage (by dredging, fishing, and anchoring), eutrophication, aquaculture, siltation, effects of coastal constructions, and food web alterations; and indirect human impacts...

متن کاملSeagrass ecophysiological performance under ocean warming and acidification
Seagrasses play an essential ecological role within coastal habitats and their worldwide population decline has been linked to different types of anthropogenic forces. We investigated, for the first time, the combined effects of future ocean warming and acidification on fundamental biological processes of Zostera noltii, including shoot density, leaf coloration, photophysiology (electron transp...
متن کاملTotal CO 2 output from Ischia Island volcano ( Italy )
The total amount of CO2 released at Ischia Island has been estimated from soil gas flux measurements and from chemical composition of the gases released by fumaroles or dissolved in groundwaters. The preliminary results indicate an overall CO2 output of about 15 kg s –1 from the entire island (46 km2). The main contribution to the total output from diffuse soil degassing is about 14.8 kg s–1, f...
متن کاملSeagrass biofilm communities at a naturally CO2-rich vent
Seagrass meadows are a crucial component of tropical marine reef ecosystems. Seagrass plants are colonized by a multitude of epiphytic organisms that contribute to broadening the ecological role of seagrasses. To better understand how environmental changes like ocean acidification might affect epiphytic assemblages, the microbial community composition of the epiphytic biofilm of Enhalus acroide...
